BODY: Standing at 5'10 (180cm) and weighing in around 220 lbs (100kg), Rafe has the build and matching stamina of a human man his age who engages in daily, strenuous exercise. He's well-muscled— arms, shoulders, chest are obvious at a glance, thighs depending how tight his pants are —without being bulky or ill-proportioned, with an economy of movement in everything except his hands when he talks. As of September 2020, Rafe has an uncanny grace when walking or moving around with an exceedingly smooth gait that almost makes him appear to glide across a floor. As of October 2020, Rafe's left arm has detached from the rest of his body at the shoulder. When separated, the bone of the upper arm is visible and appears entirely black; unless otherwise stated, the arm is kept in place with a compression sleeve worn under his shirt.
SKIN: Originally olive-toned and Mediterranean, slightly tanned with a carefully maintained level of Artistic™ Stubble. As of September 2020, Rafe's entire skin has turned black and necrotic. Unless otherwise covered, the blackened surface/subsurface discoloration is obvious and has begun to peel away from the flesh beneath as it deteriorates, revealing a new epidermis that is reminiscent of weathered black leather. As of October 2020, all of Rafe's original skin has died and sloughed off with only the new epidermis that is reminiscent of weathered black leather remaining. As of November 2020, Rafe now has gold circuitry on his left shoulder blade, extending to the triceps of his (disconnected) left arm.
EYES: Pale blue, with a ring of brown around the pupils due to a case of central heterochromia. Definitely has some crow's feet going on. As of September 2020, the sclera of Rafe's eyes have changed from white to black and the irises have begun to glow.
HAIR: Dark brown, shaved short on the sides and kept long on top. Usually worn slicked back with pomade but prone to becoming disheveled.
DRESS: Monochromatic, primarily dark colors— grays, blacks, occasionally white (i.e. an undershirt/tee). Everyday style is that of a straightforward working-man— boots, canvas pants or dark-wash jeans, tight shirts/tees with short sleeves or occasionally dress shirts only with the top button left undone and sleeves rolled up.
EQUIPMENT: Things Rafe has on any given day include... a black leather bag strapped at his hip and thigh to hold small necessities (notebook, keys, wallet, rope, etc); a bowie knife; a backsword that's since had a fuller of silver added; a pair of well-worn iron gauntlets passed down from Fenris that have since had silver added to the underside of the claw-tips.

N/A — Rafe does not currently possess a fog form. Yet.
POWERS |
- SEMI-IMMORTALITY: While his body can still be damaged, Rafe can only be killed when his phylactery has been destroyed.
- REGENERATION: Short of bodily destruction, Rafe will heal from most physical injuries at a slightly accelerated rate compared to a baseline human. This rate increases exponentially during the Fog.
- REMANIFESTATION: Should his body be destroyed, Rafe will regenerate from/at his phylactery. This process takes time, with the process taking longer each time the ability is used. The first regeneration will take two hours, and each subsequent regeneration will add one hour to this number, up to a maximum of 24 hours between bodily destruction and regeneration. This counter resets monthly.
- DEMANIFESTATION: Once per day, Rafe can decay his body into nothing and reform at his phylactery. This is a one-way trip, and he is unable to bring anyone or anything with him should he demanifest.
- ORGANIC DECAY MAGIC: Rafe can inflict decay on humans by touch — thereby either killing the cells of his victim's body, prematurely aging them or causing the body to rot. As an extension of this magic, he is also capable of shutting down a victim's senses, numbing sensation or control of limbs, inflicting terror or fear, or bestowing insomnia or nightmares. Prolonged physical contact is needed for more intense symptoms, and though these damages can be permanent when inflicted on a human, they would last a maximum of one hour on another monster.
- INORGANIC DECAY MAGIC: Rafe can inflict decay on any nonliving material by touch — some examples of this magic include rusting metals to break locks, rotting through or weakening floorboards, or making clothes threadbare.
- COLD EMANATION: As a result of his undead state and the magic that animates him, Rafe exudes a chill no matter the ambient temperature. This chill is not enough to incapacitate or harm but is certainly noticeable by most other monsters.
- SHADOW CAMOUFLAGE: Rafe has the ability to become invisible in low light/shadows/darkness to all forms of vision (i.e. troll/naga heat-vision, were/gargoyle night-vision). This ability is unable to be used in daylight/well-lit areas and can be dispelled by directing a beam of light (i.e. a flashlight, switching on an overhead light) at Rafe.
- KEVLAR SKIN: Rafe's skin is now highly resistant to slashing and piercing attacks (i.e. monster claws, monster fangs, edged weapons — swords, knives, etc.), almost of a level with Kevlar.
|
WEAKNESSES |
- PHYLACTERY: Rafe's phylactery is incredibly fragile and requires no special tools/strength/skill/ritual to destroy. Damage done to his phylactery will cause physical pain and total destruction will result in a true death, to be added to his death count.
HUNGER: The need to feed on the energy of the living. This is done by using decay magic to either age or decay his victims.
|
SKILLS |
- ARMED COMBAT: An expert fencer and swordsman, as well as a crack shot with rifles and handguns.
- UNARMED COMBAT: Highly proficient and experienced in hand-to-hand combat. His style is grounded in technical boxing but has plenty of down-and-at-'em street technique. He will curb stomp you and laugh about it.
- FREE CLIMBING: Able to scale cliffs, mountains, buildings, you name it with his bare hands though he does prefer to use a grapple and line because he's not a reckless dumbass.

phylactery;
form;
Rafe's phylactery is a pocket celestial map, circa late 17th century. Measuring 2 ¾ inches in diameter, this particular globe consists of four nesting pieces: a hinged leather outer case, a hollow terrestrial globe that separates into two separate hemispheres (north and south), and an inner armillary sphere.
The case is lined with a concave celestial map, showing illustrated constellations as seen from Earth — northern hemisphere constellations on the top half, southern hemisphere constellations on the bottom half. The globe is drawn with the best cartographic knowledge of the time as could be crammed on such a small canvas. The armillary sphere is a skeleton globe representing the movement of various celestial bodies through circles, with more illustrations of zodiacal signs.
The map is functional in that it can be taken apart but the pieces cannot be separated outside of a square foot. Feeding will only be effective when in the presence of the whole phylactery. Separating the map into its component parts does not lessen the vulnerability factor of the phylactery, and damage to any single piece is as threatening and debilitating as it would be if the pieces were nested together in the case. Destruction of any single piece will result in Rafe's death same as it would if the pieces were destroyed while nested together.

occasional fuckbuddyAU History:
○ Comes from old money family, but estranged from majority of them.
○ Daughter the result of a no-strings fling; opted to take full-custody, ex is not in the picture.
○ Originally worked as a collector of weaponry/armor, but upon the arrival of monsters to the peninsula, began researching ways to resist and repel monsters and then offered that knowledge to the well-to-do.
○ Supplies weaponry to those looking to deal with monsters through official and less than official means...
○ Side hustle offering self-defense lessons?
○ Generally anti-monster as he's generally anti-being-eaten.
ad astra;
○ He's gotten some room to breathe and operate outside of his canon-world's reputation/baggage, to establish himself on his own merits. This is a huge thing and something Rafe has practically clung to — he's gone his entire tenure in Ryslig barely talking about himself. Only two people know his full first name, with one of those having guessed it rather than Rafe having told her; no one knows his last name. Period. Likewise, only two people are aware that he had wealth in his own world and again one guessed it on inference while the other person learned through a slip of the tongue.
○ Flip side is that he actually doesn't breathe! Because he's a magically reanimated corpse and it's not necessary! Which is a bit of a mindfuck! Having died a couple times and been transformed into a monster has...not been easy. To say the least. He still struggles with the trauma of those deaths, a sense of body dysmorphia, and the positively terrifying lack of control over his physical reality between the actual transformation and game events. One thing that's helped is that at least no one he knows/worked with from back home is able to see him like this as he's still set on getting back to his own world and the search for Avery once he's back to "normal".
○ But maybe the biggest development he's made is that...Rafe has been forced into situations that have shown him to not be as big a bastard as he'd previously believed. When it comes to business, when it comes to work — yes, absolutely, everyone involved is an adult and recognizes the risk involved in black market treasure hunting, and if you choose to get in somebody's way doing that? Maybe you catch a bullet. Same logic (with less bullets involved) goes for corporate dealings. It's a cut-and-dry environment of choices with a certain amount of detachment. But in Ryslig, Rafe was brought down into some very much more visceral and personal dealings with people that he was forced to interact with rather than just jetting off on and saying it wasn't his problem. But when you're faced with a teenager having a full-on panic attack because she's growing wings, or being followed home by another kid who just arrived in monster-town with no idea of how to get bye... Rafe found himself super frustrated but still unable to just walk away from stuff like that.
○ As such, he has built some actual personal relationships based on his own actions rather than his name, his reputation, or his wealth and...actually had some people grow to care about him too. Granted, he's still a stubborn jackass insisting it was all transactional and based on building a network of contacts, but. Deep down. Way deep down. It's there.
Probably.
